Sourdough Waffles

These sourdough waffles are soft on the inside, slightly crisp on the outside, and bursting with sourdough flavor. These waffles will be your new go-to Sunday morning breakfast, I promise. Super easy to make, healthy, and absolutely delicious!

Sunday morning waffles. There is nothing more comforting than making waffles on a cozy weekend morning and drinking a cup (or two) of coffee. Waffles have always been one of my favorite breakfast foods.

Originally, waffles were always my go-to option when going out to breakfast or brunch. My reason being, they’re difficult and work to make. These waffles are SO easy and convenient, I have yet to get waffles at any restaurant since making these. If I am being completely honest, I have even made these waffles before going to work – so quick and easy!

Sourdough waffles are the perfect meal to serve friends and family. You will be making these so often! Cover in strawberries, syrup, whip cream, chocolate chips, the options are endless! I also love using these waffles to make savory waffles, the sourdough is perfect for that!

I guarantee you will love these waffles, enjoy!

  • Prep Time 10 Minutes
  • Cook Time 5 Minutes
  • Ferment 1 hour
  • Serves 6 People

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup (200 grams) sourdough discard
  • 1 ½ cups buttermilk
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 5 tablespoons browned butter
  • 2 cups flour (I use one cup whole wheat and one cup all purpose)
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp fine sea salt

Instructions

  1. Start by making your browned butter. Place butter in a pan on the stove at a low temperature. Let the butter slowly melt. After the butter has melted it will start to foam and grow. It will smell like vanilla, nutty, deliciousness. Set browned butter aside to cool.
  2. Mix together sourdough discard, buttermilk, eggs, honey, and vanilla. Whisk until just combined.
  3. In a separate bowl mix together flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Add the wet ingredients to the dry, mix. Add browned butter, mix.
  5. Let the batter sit on the counter for 1 hour. After one hour you can use the batter to make waffles in the waffle iron of your choice. Enjoy!
